Samuel Ato Duncan to Lead Traditional Medicine Practice Council as Board Chair

Prof. Samuel Ato Duncan (Honorary Professor of Alfred Nobel University, Ukraine), C.E.O of COA Research and Manufacturing Limited Company (COARMLC) has been appointed Board Chair of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC), during an inauguration ceremony of governing boards and councils of six critical health institutions by the Ministry of Health, while marking a major milestone in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare regulation and service delivery.
The ceremony, held at the Ministry’s auditorium, brought together senior government officials, health sector stakeholders, and newly appointed Board and Council members.
The six agencies inaugurated are National Blood Service, National Ambulance Service, Mental Health Authority, Ghana College of Pharmacists, Allied Health Professions Council and Traditional Medicine Practice Council.

Among the notable appointments, Prof. Ato Duncan has been named Chairperson of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council, which regulates a sector serving more than 60% of Ghanaians. Other distinguished Chairpersons announced include Dr. Emmanuel Maurice Ankrah- National Blood Service Board, Dr. Dan Bazanndut- Mental Health Authority Board, Prof. Francis Ackah Armah- Ghana College of Pharmacists Council and Prof. Eric Kotei Addison- Allied Health Professions Council

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, in his keynote address, commended the appointees for their expertise and dedication. He expressed confidence that their leadership would drive transformative progress across their respective agencies.

The Minister stressed several urgent priorities, closing Ghana’s annual blood supply gap of 120,000 units, addressing treatment needs of over 2.3 million Ghanaians living with mental health conditions, regulating traditional medicine practices to ensure safety and quality and tackling the shortage of pharmacists and allied health professionals.
He urged the Boards to champion reforms, improve inter-agency collaboration, and promote specialisation to elevate standards in healthcare delivery.
